An Oregon Couple Gets Their Dream Wine Room

Chuck Allen and Rilla Delorier are no strangers to fun. From adventuring around their new home state in a tent-topped jeep to catching all the curves on a cross-country motorcycle ride, good times are pretty much always on the agenda.

So when it came to designing a wine lounge and cellar for the Portland home they’ve dubbed “Eagle Point,” they had a grand vision of a space for spontaneous get togethers, stretching out, and soaking up all the beauty life (and that bottle of 00 Wines Pinot) has to offer.

The team behind the dream

We transformed this previously unused space into a custom under stairs wine cellar for this Portland, Oregon home.

The design wishlist for the lounge and wine cellar was all about balance:

  • Luxurious without being stuffy

  • Modern, but timeless

  • Personality with polish

Chuck and Rilla brought in Interior Designer Candace Ullal to set the tone for the project and translate their dreams into design specs. Her mix of marble, dark hardwoods and leather with plush textiles in soft whites makes for a space you’re innately drawn to. Clean lines create a sense of spaciousness and leave room for your eye to roam, and a built-in banquette has plenty of fire-side seating without sacrificing space.

When Sommi got involved to create the wine cellar side of the build, we knew we needed to carry the same feel and materials throughout. Everything in the cellar is custom, from the hand-crafted, leather-clad racking system and bulk storage compartments inspired by a trip Chuck and Rilla took to Italy.

The wine cellar holds over 1,000 bottles in total, with climate control to create an optimal long-term storage and aging environment, and two Perlick wine fridges for white wines and Champagne.

Multi-colored mood lighting can be changed with the flip of a switch, and a forged steel library ladder glides along the entire length of the cellar so each bottle is right at their fingertips. Every surface and finish was thought through down to the smallest detail — including one of our favorites, the hummingbird cutout step lights that were designed to match their upstairs bar.

A team of craftspeople from Portland and Bend came together to complete this build. Erik Anderson from The Grout Company did a seamless job on construction, without so much as a speck of sawdust out of place. We brought in our go-to craftsmen from Makers Woodworks for racking and cabinetry, Orion Forge for handles, hardware, and the ladder system, Link Leather who did a flawless job on all the leather details, and David Bertman, who fabricated the step lights and has crafted other gorgeous metal details in the home.

This one is going to be a favorite of ours for a long time. Here’s to Chuck and Rilla and all of our talented partners — may your glasses always be full!
